Bill C-54 Expect a major impact on Canadian business Canadian lawyers should take a very close look at the Federal Government’s new Personal Information and Electronic Documents Act (Bill C-54). Introduced on October 1, 1998, the bill is now being considered by the House of Commons Industry Committee, and is expected to pass into law by June of this year. C-54 stands out (along with the gun control legislation) as one of the only efforts by this liberal government to extend the scope of regulatory activity into previously unregulated areas.
Good Judgment Vs Public Opinion Judicial independence in the face of public ire Public opinion today appears to hold an immense amount of power. It determines who will and who will not be in government; what will be viewed favorably and what will be denounced in our media; and which policies may and which may not become law. Fortunately, it does not yet have the power to influence judicial decision-making--but not from lack of effort.
