Equality Rights in the New Century

The West Coast Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund presents “Transforming Women’s Future: Equality Rights in the New Century” from November 4-7 in Vancouver. This national, law-related forum’s main themes include the social and economic rights of women; revisiting constitutional personhood: a focus on the experience of native women; violence and abuse and the intersection of race and gender. In addition, there will be about forty law-related workshops dealing with strategies, tools, resources and skills, on topics identified in a community survey carried out last year.

Pregs Govender, an ANC Member of the South African National Assembly, will deliver the opening address on the evening of Thursday, November 4, 1999. Ms. Govender has been an activist for most of her life. First a teacher in high schools and university, she moved on to work as a National Education Officer and later, Collective Bargaining and Research Officer for SACTU, the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union, the union with the largest women’s membership in SA. One of her current roles is Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Quality of Life and Status of Women. She has been asked to establish the relationship between the situation of women in Canada and the global struggle for equality rights in her presentation at the forum.
