The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) is the essential ally and advocate of all members of the legal profession; it is the voice for all members of the profession and its primary purpose is to serve its members; it is the premier provider of personal and professional development and support to all members of the legal profession; it promotes fair justice systems, facilitates effective law reform, promotes equality in the legal profession and is devoted to the elimination of discrimination; the CBA is a leading edge organization committed to enhancing the professional and commercial interests of a diverse membership and to protecting the independence of the judiciary and the Bar.

Today, the Association represents some 35,000 lawyers, judges, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada. Approximately two-thirds of all practising lawyers in Canada belong to the CBA.

The CBA is a professional organization which was formed in 1896 and incorporated under a special act of Parliament in 1921. The purpose of the Association is to:

• enhance the professional and commercial interests of our members and protect the independence of the judiciary and the bar
• provide personal and professional development and support to all members
• promote fair justice systems and facilitate effective law reform
• promote equality in the legal profession and eliminate discrimination

Our Goal
The goal of the BC Branch of the CBA (CBABC) is to be the primary resource and voice for its members in all issues affecting its members.

The delivery of value to all members and the recognition of that value by the membership is paramount.

Priorities
The eight equal priorities of the CBABC are:

• To promote the interests of lawyers and other members;
• To support members’ professional education;
• To be the voice of the profession;
• To provide member services;
• To promote inclusiveness and diversity in the law schools, the Branch and the profession;
• To enhance communications with the membership;
• To promote and enhance the image of lawyers; and
• To promote the public interest.
