Distinguished Service Awards

The Canadian Bar Association - Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta are pleased to announce that the 2012 Distinguished Service Award recipients:
 

  • David P. Jones, Q.C. for Distinguished Service in Legal Scholarship
  • Michael F. Casey, Q.C. for Distinguished Service to the Community
  • Cheryl C. Gottselig, Q.C. for Distinguished Service to the Profession
  • W. Laird Hunter, Q.C. for Distinguished Service in Pro Bono

 

Jointly presented by The Canadian Bar Association Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta, these prestigious awards shine a light on the outstanding contributions Alberta lawyers make to the community,  the legal profession, pro bono service and to legal scholarship. 


The 2012 Distinguished Service Awards luncheon was held January 27, 2012 at the Alberta Law Conference in the Westin Hotel, Calgary.
 



Cecilia Johnstone Award For Outstanding Service

The Outstanding Service Award recognizes exceptional involvement,
dedication and service to the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Bar Association.

Eligibility
 
  • Any member of the Canadian Bar Association-Alberta Branch in good standing.
  • Members of the Executive Committee of the Branch are not eligible for the Award.
  • Past Presidents of the Branch are ineligible for the Award for a period of two years following the expiration of their term on the Executive Committee.
  • No more than one award may be awarded in any one year.
  • No award need be granted in any one year.
  • There are no posthumous awards.
 
Presentation
 
The Award is normally presented at the Alberta Law Conference. Recipients of the award will be paid their travel expenses to attend the Awards presentation. Travel expenses will be paid in accordance with the existing policies and procedures of the Branch.
 
Nomination procedure
 
  • The Executive Committee of the Branch or any member of the Provincial Council of the Branch may make nominations.
  • Nominations shall be accompanied by a letter disclosing the nominee’s name, address, telephone number and a brief submission outlining the nominee’s suitability for the award.
  • All supporting documentation shall be submitted to the Edmonton or Calgary offices of the Canadian Bar Association-Alberta Branch by the 30th day of November.
 
Selection Process
 
The selection committee shall include the President, Vice-President, Immediate Past President and Executive Director of the Branch. The selection committee shall also include the chairperson of the Membership Committee and one Section Co-ordinator.
